Atlanta: Support Local Businesses This Holiday

It happens to me ever year. The holidays somehow sneak up on me. Before I know it, I’m in a frenzy to get everyone checked off my shopping list. The internet has been an ally of mine in recent years, allowing me to do all my shopping from my warm and cozy home office. This holiday season, I’ve pledged to buy all my presents from local vendors.

Here are some local gift ideas I love:

Jolly Nut Company

Jolly Nut Company sent me some of their pecans to try. Established in 1924, Jolly Nut Company is located in Fort Valley Georgia, in the heart of Peach County. They offer pecans that are locally grown in some of Georgia’s richest and most abundant farmlands. I got a sampling of

  • Sugar ‘n Spice Pecans
  • Roasted & Salted Pecan Halves
  • Sweet & Salty Pecans
  • Chocolate Pecan Halves
  • Praline Pecans
  • Frosted Peach Pecans

Wow – these were tasty and quality pecans! Mr. ARB got into the chocolate pecans and I was lucky to get just one before he polished off the bag. They each have their own taste and it would be difficult to pick a favorite. The Praline pecans are fantastic, but for something very uniquely Georgia, the Frosted Peach Pecans can’t be beat. Sweet samplers can be  ordered from the Jolly Nut Company here.

The Brew Blazes

The Brew Blazes re-cycles kickass beer, wine, and liquor bottles into candles and incense burners. The say they “are saving the world 12oz at a time while providing light and good smells to all.” I came across these candles at my local liquor store. All candles are made with 100% soy wax. Soy wax is non-toxic and burns cleaner and longer than paraffin wax. Soy wax doesn’t emit soot that can disclor walls and furniture and it doesn’t contaminate the ductwork in homes either. The candles burn an average of 8-9 hours per ounce of wax. It is also biodegradable.  It is a great gift for a beer fanatic. Some even reflect the images on the bottles onto the wall. Read more about The Brew Blazes here.

Owner Tim Pattison tells me the Kentucky Bourbon scent is the most popular. You can purchase these candles online but be aware the bottles in stock vary on what they are drinking and what others bring them. Here are some places where Brew Blazes candles are available:

  • Blind Murphy Craft Beer Market – Alpharetta
  • The Beer Growler – Alpharetta, Avondale Estates, Brookhaven, Johns Creek, & Suwanee
  • J.U.G.S  Just ‘ur Growler Store – Sandy Springs
  • Sweetwater Brewery

Serv International

This is a unique concept and a little different that the other two products listed above. Serv International feeds millions in impoverished countries like Kenya and The Dominican Republic. The cost of a meal? $0.05. No, that’s not a glitch. These dehydrated pouches of food are shipped to poor countries and re-hydrated. Each meal contains 680 calories and essential vitamins and minerals. I’ve had one – not too shabby! So, you can feed a person for only pennies.

What does this have to do with supporting a local business you may be wondering? SERV has relationships with major manufacturers throughout the country, and have partnered to buy closeout items at majorly discounted pricing. They then sell these at The SERV Store, a for-profit discount retail store that contributes a large percentage of its net profits to SERV International.

The SERV Store boasts incredible deals on furniture, small appliances, home décor, clothing, electronics and more. I scored a 6-quart Crock Pot for only $28. This is NOT thrift store – no used goods here. When shopping for Xmas gifts, why not visit the Canton based SERV store and pick up some fantastic deals?

These are just a couple local gift giving ideas. No doubt, there are plenty nearby. Please help support local businesses this holiday season by purchasing your gifts from local vendors. Happy Shopping!
