Although Bangkok Cabin is a short 6 minute drive from my house, I didn’t know Bangkok Cabin existed until I read a review of it in my local paper. This was a couple years ago, and since then I’ve been patronizing Bangkok Cabin, more for take out orders than anything else.
That being said, let’s get the negatives out of the way up front:
1. You know how they say, so and so has a face for radio? Well, Bangkok Cabin has an atmosphere for take out. Think wood paneling on the walls, chairs on wheels, and cartoons on tv for the kids in the next room. Not to mention every time I’ve been there it has been pretty stuffy inside.
2. Appetizers. I’ve had the spring rolls and basil rolls and thought they were ok, but certainly nothing special. And the portions were very small for the price. The basil rolls which they say are a quantity of 2 were like one large size basil roll chopped into 4 pieces. The spring rolls (quantity of 4) were not quite as teeny tiny but small and not worth the $5 price.
You are better off ordering one of the soups, which will leave you feeling pretty full. My favorite is the Coconut Chicken, a must every time I visit. I could just put 3 or 4 spoonfulls of steamed rice into the soup and make it a meal.
I’ve tried to work my way through the menu, but the curry dishes are just so darn good, I find it hard to stray. You really can’t go wrong with any of them – Red Curry, Green Curry, Panang Curry, Masaman Curry – All are excellent and provide a generous portion of meat.
I’ve only tried one of their specials, appropriately named “One Night in Bangkok.” This consists of shrimp and scallops sautéed in curry powder with garlic, red bell peppers, green beans, zucchini, and some Panang curry sauce. The description sounds a lot better than it tastes. Don’t get me wrong it is fine, just nothing that special.
Service has always been friendly and efficient. Lunch specials are very reasonable at $6.95. Dinners average around $9.95 with specials around $14.95. Good options for Vegetarians.
