What is Schnitzel? Chicken breast pounded, breaded, and fried until it’s golden brown delicious. Sounds pretty great, right? How do you make it even better? Put it in a wrap and mix it with international ingredients. That’s what Seven Hens in Decatur has been doing for a little of a year since they’ve been open.
It is called Seven Hens because of the seven countries each wrap represents: America, India, Mexico, Italy, France, China, and Germany. Does it get better than that? Yep. They’ve worked with beer aficionado Ale Sharpton to create a beer pairing to go with each sandwich. We were invited to sample their beer and schnitzel sandwich pairings last week.
My favorite of all the sandwiches was the American with Cajun seasoning and barbecue sauce. The Mexican was my second favorite and I thought the pairing with Terrapin Hopsecutioner was terrific. Be aware, the Mexican is VERY hot and spicy. The Indian, on the hand was not spicy at all, but I loved the White Thai beer that went with that wrap.
Each sandwich or wrap is $7.49. They are huge, and quite filling. Order a platter ($8.99) which comes with tasty sides like sweet potato fries (highly recommend!), cole slaw or cucumber salad and two could easily share a rather inexpensive meal. Vegetarian? Not to worry – all sandwiches can be made in Tofu version as well.
