Golden Krust Restaurant Review, Atlanta, GA

I’ve found my new guilty pleasure. It’s the curry chicken lunch special at Golden Krust. I just finished eating my lunch and I can’t wait to get back to Golden Krust for some more of that yummy goodness. The meat was so tender, it was practically falling of the bone. And the curry sauce was perfection.

I happened to notice Gold Krust the other day while running an errand, although it is a little hard to see as it is somewhat set back on Barrett Parkway.I made a note to go back and check it out as soon as I had a chance. Today was my lucky day. I got there around 12:15 and I think I just beat the lunch crowd.

Located in a small suite adjacent to the Toys R Us in the strip mall, it ‘s full name is Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill. In addition to caribbean specialties like curry chicken, stew chicken, and jerk chicken, they offer a variety of patties and (surprise, surprise) pastries.

This is the kind of food I grew up eating and am thrilled that there is a local restaurant that provides food like this. If you are familair with Indian food, do not expect this curry to taste like what you would find at a traditional Indian restaurant. The spices are a little different. And, as you can see from the pictures, it doesn’t resemble traditional Indian curry. Caribbean curry is definitely less creamy than Indian curry. But if you love hot and spicy this won’t disappoint! It had just the right amount of spice that I could feel the burn, but not too much that I couldn’t enjoy my meal.

After I had placed my order, I saw a long line forming behind me. It is probably more of a lunch crowd than a dinner crowd. And the patrons mostly seem to be from the Caribbean, based on their accents. Although there were enough tables to handle the lunch crowd that came in behind me, my guess is most customers take the food to go. It really is the only way to eat it, that way, with no one watching, you can pick the chicken up with your hands and make sure you get all the meat off of the bone.

Service was very friendly. Prices are extremely reasonable. My lunch special included curry chicken, peas and rice, plantains (well, 1 plantain), and a small salad. All of this for $4.99. The regular dinner price for this is around $7.50. I intend to go back and try their patties soon, all of which are under $2.

This is a national chain located along the east coast. Not sure how long Golden Krust has been located in Kennesaw, or Atlanta for that matter, but I hope they continue to thrive here. They have several locations throughout Atlanta and I definitely recommend checking them out. If you aren’t feeling too adventurous, stick with something like the Jerk Chicken or Stew Chicken which won’t be too spicy.
