Habanero’s Taqueria, Woodstock, GA Restaurant Review

churros woodstock, ga

My friend, Susan enthusiastically messaged me about an incredible Mexican restaurant near her home that she and her husband had recently discovered. Habanero’s Taqueria is located in a tiny strip mall in Woodstock out in burbs. Susan raved about it so much and she insisted on treating me to dinner as she loved it so much. So, on a Friday night we headed out to Habaneros for a double date.

Like many authentically delicious Mexican restaurants, they aren’t going to win an awards for their decor. There are probably about seven booths in the entire restaurant . But what they lack in decor they make up for ten fold in food. On the first visit, the salsa was incredible, perfectly spiced and thick. However, a second visit found it to be incredibly watery.

I’ve been back twice since the initial visit and tried many things. Friday specials seem to be the Barbacoa (shredded beef) burrito which is quite good. But a Pastor Burrito with a spicy red sauce was way too hot and spicy. There seems to be a little inconsistency between heat levels in the kitchen.

I’ve done the mix and match taco thing with great results: Camaron (shrimp), Pastor (pork) and the Tasajo (beef) tacos were all excellent and overstuffed with meats. The amount of food here can’t be beat for the price. The three taco plate was around $8.

Another entree, the Chicken a la Albaca (chicken burrito with a basil cream sauce) is one of their signature entrees and the unique flavor is heavenly. It comes with rice and beans but I don’t care much for them. Tamales are another entree that many seem to be fond of. Interesting that it is served with a lentil soup.

While we’ve never had a wait for a table even on a weekend visit, service can be a little spotty. Seems that on several busy nights they only had one server for the restaurant, which can lead to long waits for food. So, don’t fill up on chips even though you’ll be temped. You must save room for churros.
