Relish Restaurant in Roswell Bites the Dust

The Condiment Group announced last Monday that Relish Restaurant, located in historic Roswell, will cease operation on December 31, 2010. They cited changing trends in dining for their reasoning to close Relish. Relish will be replaced with a new concept in late January, Pico Auténtico. The new restaurant will offer Mexican cuisine under chef Andy Badgett. “And, Relish won’t be completely buried” according to Badgett, “as fans will likely find some hints of Relish favorites on Pico’s menu come January.”

This is pretty disappointing as I just ate at Relish for the first time last month. Their pimento cheese fritters, featured on TLC, had me all worked up – they were so tasty, and totally lived up to their reputation – complete heaven.

We also ordered the nachos with bbq pork on top. I can’t put my finger on it, but there was some sort of spice that gave the dish and Indian taste to it, some umph and made it a standout. It is pretty large, so if you aren’t too hungry share that and split an entree. It’ll be easier on your wallet too.

Our server, Margaret, highly recommended the scallops which are served over a succotash that is ‘to die for,’ her words, not mine. I didn’t get the scallops, but I did ask her to bring me a side of the succotash. And yep, it is divine.

What we did order was the pork chop. I know, bbq pork appetizer and then pork chop. More of the same. But it was a completely different taste. This pork chop was served up with beans an rice. We mopped it up and were pleasantly full.

But after hearing great things about the fried peach pie, we just couldn’t pass it up. It is a bit unusual in that it is served up in 3 half moon pieces. There was something tart in it like cranberries or something similar that I wasn’t expecting. I didn’t care for it, but it wasn’t one of things that is just about personal preference cause Glen absolutely loved it.

So glad we stumbled on Relish and it was so nice to simply walk up to restaurant on a Saturday night with no reservation and score a table on the patio on a perfect Atlanta evening, but perhaps maybe indicative of why Relish is closing? If you’ve not been yet, definitely put Relish in Roswell on your list of must-trys before the end of the year.
