TAP Gastropub Midtown, Atlanta, GA Restaurant Review

Although TAP Gastropub has been around for three years, I recently visited TAP for the first time. Although it was a warm Atlanta evening, I noticed many diners….er…drinkers chose to sit outside on the patio – they were having a convivial time for sure. While this certainly had it’s appeal, I chose indoor seating, wanting to take in the bar / kitchen action.

TAP has a primo Midtown location at the corner of Peachtree and 14th Street. The nice thing is you won’t pay primo dinero for parking, like Colony Square just across the street. Valet is complimentary. Upon entering TAP, you’ll notice the two-story restaurant has seating both upstairs and downstairs. The bar, downstairs is the most crowded and I could see it being absolutely packed on weekend night. The upstairs, where the kitchen is located lends itself to groups or couples. It is also the same floor the bathroom is located and it is a lot of steps to get up there. So, ladies if you are wearing heels, just take the elevator.

We started off with the Hummus as well as the beet salad. The hummus was a very generous portion with not only pita bread for dipping but also cucumber slices. I will say that the hummus had a lot of lemon in it. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s just up to your personal preference as to whether or not you enjoy that much lemon. I did notice the cucumbers tended to cut the lemon flavor much more than when I ate the hummus with the pita triangles, fyi.

Now the beet salad was absolutely delicious. Glen said it was the best salad he can remember having in a very long time. The red and golden yellow beets were plentiful and played off the tart cheese, sweet pecans and sherry vinagrette dressing. And wouldn’t you know it, I accidentally deleted the picture before I downloaded it. Doh!

Oh, I also couldn’t pass up getting a taco. I chose the shrimp a la diabla, which comes with a spicy ancho salsa and cilantro. Really love that this isn’t some wimpy taco. There were about 4 or 5 decent sized shrimps allowing for shrimp in each bite. They are only like $3.50 a piece and a couple could fill ya up.

I decided on the lamb sandwich, not wanting a full meal, but rather a sandwich. I chose to add pub fries to my order as well as an additional order of Mexican street corn. The lamb meat was so tender and moist. While I did love that as well as the basil and arugala on the sandwich, I found that the apple jam to be a little too sweet for me, so I ended up scraping it off my sandwich.

Meanwhile, Glen loved his stuffed trout. It was stuffed with a shrimp mousse, zucchini, sun-dried tomatoes and mushrooms – yum! He gave me a couple bites and wow, what an impressive dish that is. Not only is the taste terrific but the presentation is beautiful. If you want to try it, you’d better hurry. Chef told me he thinks he’ll be taking it off later this fall.

We should have stopped there, but after Chef described the Peanut Butter Chocolate Bar, how could I say no? It’s small but packs a ton of flavor. Think of it like a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup on steroids. I most certainly found TAP Gastropub to be “a convivial place to have a pint!”
