Last month, The Shed at Glenwood was debuting their new summer menu and I was invited to a Media Dinner. I love freebies especially when good food is involved, so I made sure to attend, even if it meant fighting my way through Braves evening game traffic.
I was happy to see that The Shed has an open kitchen. With a hottie chef like Lance Gummere who wouldn’t want to see him in action? He is also on the short list of hottest Atlanta chefs over at Adventurous Tastes.
Upon entering, we were presented with some bubbly and noshed on apps of Foie Gras with Blueberry Jam on Bread, Chicken Liver and Bacon Bruschetta, and Deviled Quail Eggs. Although these were small bites meant to nibble on while we mingled, I found them to be very substantial. The Foie Gras was solid and was perfectly capable of standing on its own without the “aid” of the Blueberry jam. I loved the Chicken Liver and Bacon Bruschetta. The Deviled quail eggs were and interesting take – about the size of a quarter, I only had one and as I said it was very substantial.
We sampled 2 different salads: Beet Salad with goat cheese and a Watermelon salad with Feta. Both had a balsamic sauce to compliment them. The beet salad (I heart beets) was tasty with 2 different kinds of beets (red and yellow). Since I am not a fan of goat cheese, I didn’t mind that it’s flavor was somewhat subdued. As for the Watermelon salad, the salty feta balanced well with the sweet melon. I barley tasted any balsamic as there was hardly any on the plate. But balsamic can be a slippery slope; a little too much and you’ve ruined your salad.
The Shed has a great special of $3 sliders on Wednesday evenings. In fact, I plan on going back soon to sample more. So, it was fitting we started off with sliders. Our group tried 3 varieties: Pork Schnitzel, Pastrami, and Fried Chicken. There wasn’t enough for everyone to sample, so, I was limited to the pork which was fine as it was tender and juicy. I couldn’t have eaten more than 1 anyway. For sliders, they were a large portion. And it isn’t all bread either – all of them were packed full of meat. I think we would have all been happy if they came quartered so that we all could have sampled each of the 3 (just a suggestion for next dinner).
Funny, I thought the ribeye and lump crab would have been my favorite, but the trout was the highlight for me. Light, full of flavor and complimented by the pesto sauce. Perhaps a tad heavy on the pesto for some, but I enjoyed it.
The prior entree did have a new discovery for me: sunchokes. If you have never heard of sunchokes, they are also known as Jerusalem Artichokes, read about them here. They tasted like a cross between a potato and an artichoke. More restaurants should serve these.
Out of the 3 desserts we sampled, the date cake was by far the best, very moist and sweet but not overly so. It was simple and elegant and the perfect finish to our meal. The other two choices seemed to be a homemade version of store bought desserts with a twist: The house made ding dong and the chocolate peanut butter bar. The ding dong tasted, well, like a ding dong and the chocolate peanut butter bar (sort of like a Peanut butter cup) was creative with dark chocolate for twist. But I think it backfired, I didn’t find the dark chocolate (although I love it) to pair well with the peanut butter. Milk chocolate would have been better in this combo.
Overall, a decent menu, especially great starters and salads. I look forward to going back for 3 buck slider night and vegetarians should definitely visit for Thursday veggie night (4 veggies for 10 bucks). Don’t even think about not ordering the sunchokes.
My only regret is not being able to sample some of the more obscure menu items. I had my heart set on the scallop sliders and am intrigued by the fried chicken hearts. Foodies like me love trying new and different items like this, and want restaurants to let us sample unique menu items such as these so we can let our readers know about them. Perhaps a return visit is in order.
