Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, Alpharetta, GA Venue Review

I am not much of a concert goer, but I do enjoy live music once in a while. So, I was pleased when the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park opened. North Atlanta really needed a venue like the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre.

My first visit to the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre was for a 4th of July Concert by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The layout is very much like that of the Lakewood Amphitheatre. Close to the stage is covered seating and beyond that is the lawn seating. Although we only had lawn seats, the sound was very good. And fortunately rain was not in the forecast. There are lawn chairs that can be rented for about $5 each. We used them and they were comfortable (see picture below) – much better than sitting on the ground.

I’ve been back several times for concerts since then. My favorite concert at Verizon Wireless by far was Howard Jones, OMD and Barenaked Ladies! Check out my boomerang from their show:

If you plan on getting lawn tickets, I highly recommend you either rent chairs or bring your own. The lawn is sloped and is awkward for simply sitting on a blanket. Chairs will give you more stability. Also, many people sit in chairs, so if you are on the ground, your view of the stage will be blocked to some degree. The rental fee of $5 is worth it to me, to not have to drag chairs from the car to the lawn.

Of course it isn’t enough that the name “Verizon” is everywhere. They have to have a wireless store on site at the amphitheater, cause doesn’t everyone go shopping for a new cell phone during a concert?

I couldn’t write a review without mentioning the food. It is your usual fare: hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, pizzas and the like. I had the hot dog and fries when I visited. It was decent. Not great, but not bad either. The combo of hot dog fries and drink runs about $8. So, you can expect to pay around $10 if you want a pizza something a bit more substantial.

I recommend going to visit one of the nearby Alpharetta restaurants if time allows. The Village Tavern is my go to spot, but The Diner at North Point is a good choice too. Both are somewhat close to the venue and much more pleasant an experience than just eating a hot dog. Also, some of these restaurants even have specials where you can purchase a single ticket that has the combo of dinner and an event on certain dates. I’ve seen them under $50 for the combo.

What happened to the schedule for 2013? This is such a great venue?! Why does Aaron’s at Lakewood get all the great acts?
