Mason Tavern opened in Decatur last fall. Mason Tavern takes its name from nearby Mason Mill Park. I was surprised that with the amount of restaurants (approximately four) in the strip mall the tiny parking lot is able to accommodate all the cars. I guess many of the restaurant do take-out. But Mason Tavern is the kind of spot you want to hang out and have one of their well-made cocktails.
The bar is the focal point of the restaurant with flat screens hovering above liquor bottles. Overall, the restaurant is industrial looking, but the staff is warm and cheery. For a light and refreshing cocktail, get the Pimm the Tail on the Saint with Pimm’s, St. Germain and cucumber. It was a good start, but I’ve been in a bit of a Manhattan phase lately and fell in love with Mason Tavern’s Manhattan East. It was excellent – you should go get one. Cocktails are reasonably priced at around $10.
The menu is small and divided into sections of bites, salads sandwiches and mains. However, I would have been pretty happy to order several selection’s from Mason Tavern’s Bites section. There are the Cheddar & Corn Hushpuppies with red Chili Jam which were tempting. But we didn’t get those (maybe next time). Instead we opted for the very interesting sounding Dutch Baby, a flat-bread like crepe topped with duck, honey, mascarpone and arugula. All things I love, but I didn’t care for the crepe – too chewy. Maybe others felt that way and that’s why this item is no longer on Mason Tavern’s menu.
Again, I was tempted by the Piggy Mac & Cheese but we opted for the healthier Roasted Broccoli & Cauliflower. I don’t know what the chef does to this, but it was incredible. The Jerusalem salad is another standout item on the menu. It has delicious eggplant, fried artichokes and tahini vinaigrette dressing. It’s perfect for a vegetarian or a light starter for sharing.
Surprisingly, the main entrees only have five selections. We shared the Steak Frites as it was quite large. We devoured Mason Tavern’s steak. Oh and remember that article I wrote about the juice cleanse and how I was supposed to be eating a vegan diet prior to doing this cleanse? Yeah, I was chowing down on this steak on the eve of the cleanse. I will say that the steak was more rare than medium as we had asked, but still phenomenal.
There’s a decent sized patio for the spring days ahead, plus there are two large communal tables for group outings. Mason Tavern is open for brunch too.
