When Here to Serve restaurants abruptly closed their doors, many loyal customers were left bewildered about where they’d get this type of unique tapas and seafood they were accustomed to at these restaurants. So, when Tom Catherall, a beloved Atlanta chef, opened Taco Cowboy in the heart of the Virginia Highlands, his loyal customers came in droves to support him.
At Taco Cowboy, you’ll find deliciously presented salads, tasty tacos and steaks. The chic restaurant is much more upscale than you’d expect from your typical taco joint. There’s a lovely patio in the back that shares space with La Tavola as well. Start you meal off with your own personal pitcher of margaritas. Go ahead, sip it directly out of the pitcher, I won’t judge you.
I dined at Taco Cowboy as it was in transition, so I’m sad that some of the delicious items I had will no longer be available. However, one item that I’m thrilled will remain is the fried catfish (pictured at the top). This is a secret menu not listed, but available for those in know. They work with a local fisherman who delivers whatever he catches to Taco Cowboy. They only have a limited number each night. When ours was delivered, several other tables in eyeshot couldn’t resist ordering it for themselves.
Should you want, there are more hearty dishes at Taco Cowboy like steaks, a chicken fried pork chop barbecue salmon and more. The salmon was delicious, but the skirt steak we sampled was exceptional. Planning a special occasion? Ask for table 21 when you call to make your reservation. It’s the only table in the restaurant with a table cloth and is the best in the house (seats 4).
Desserts are not to be missed either. While there’s always a seasonal special (we had a pumpkin crumble that was a favorite), you can always order the Apple Pie Tacos at Taco Cowboy.

You can find street parking nearby or if you are parallel parking challenged like me, just use the free valet in the lot behind Taco Cowboy.
