Viber is a VOIP (voice over IP) way to call people for free around the world.
It is an App available on iPhone and Android phones and once installed you can call anyone for free but it will use your data plan. Viber users could be anywhere in the world if they are connected to internet.
You don’t have to register to use Viber uses your phone number as your “identity” and lets you make free Viber phone calls to any of your friends who also have Viber installed. Once you’ve downloaded Viber, you will receive an access code via SMS or callback to activate Viber. The access code ensures that you are the real owner of the cellphone number you have registered and prevents others from obtaining your access code and placing calls with your caller ID. You can make calls and send texts via WiFi, as well as via 3G.
Some people don’t understand the difference between Viber and Skype. While Skype can be used on desktops and computers, Viber is for calling and texting from smart phones.
While Viber is a terrific option for calling, especially when you are overseas, try to make every effort to find out what the WiFi is like in the county you will be visiting. As I found out when I visited India last month and planned to use Viber to call back to the United States, getting WiFi is nearly impossible in India! So, I had to the pay the carrier rates for international calling.
