Overpacking: A Confession From the Hoodie Years

When you’re packing for a trip, you might notice that there’s a pattern to it. Packing for five days worth when you’re going for 3 days only. But when you’re actually travelling, its the same set of comfortable clothes that you end up wearing throughout the trip. Let’s have a look at why we suffer like this.

Packing with a touch of imagination

You’re not packing what you will wear, in other words, these clothes aren’t for yourself. What you pack is what you are imagining yourself to be wearing, not what you will actually wear. And its understandable because while travelling sometimes fatigue builds up and you don’t get yourself the leisure of dressing up like you expected.

The “Just in Case” Scenario

With your imagination, there are times when ‘just in case’ plays a vital role. Just in case, it rains or there’s a wedding, or… Its fine to stay prepared, but these are exactly the items that end up packed when the ‘just in case’ scenario doesn’t fold out.

The deadweight of fancy shoes

Now this is a very significant part of packing up, footwear. You pack up for different dresses, occasions and what not. Nevertheless, the pair of the most worn and comfortable sneakers are the ones being used while the packed ones are just passengers along.

The breadwinner

Believe it or not, a hoodie that is comfortable, goes well with most styles, looks good, hides stains, isn’t the breadwinner in that suitcase. Most of the trip ends while wearing it.

Your Bag Is Not a Closet

A suitcase isn’t storage. It’s a commute. Everything inside gets dragged through airports and up stairs. Picture carrying it up four floors with no elevator. Suddenly that third sweater feels optional.

The Outfit Math Trick

Pick tops and bottoms that all match each other. Three tops and two bottoms make six outfits. It’s the same trick as a restaurant reusing ingredients, and nobody complains.

Laundry Exists Everywhere

People forget clothes can be washed on a trip. A quick sink rinse or hotel laundry beats hauling a week of extras. You’re traveling, not escaping civilization.

The Pile Test

Lay out everything you plan to bring. Then put half back. It feels brutal, but you’ll miss almost nothing. Nobody ever came home saying, “I wish I’d packed more socks I didn’t wear.”

The Bottom Line

Overpacking is really anxiety in a zip bag. Pack for the trip you’ll take, not the one you’re scared of. The lightest suitcase belongs to the person who trusts they’ll be fine.
