Airport security rules are catching travelers off guard over these nine everyday items

Airport security rules are catching travelers off guard over these nine everyday items

The 3-1-1 liquid rule is well known by most travelers, but items are regularly removed from bags at TSA checkpoints. You don’t have to be a liquid, you don’t have to be a shampoo bottle or a water bottle to be classified as a liquid, gel or aerosol, according to TSA. Food, toiletries and sometimes even souvenirs can catch out guests who thought otherwise. If you know what items are subject to the rules, you won’t need to run to the garbage.

Peanut butter counts as a liquid

Peanut butter counts as a liquid

One item that TSA officers report they confiscate the most is peanut butter. The agency labels it a spreader and so uses it like lotion or toothpaste. Items over 3.4 ounces will be placed in checked luggage. This is the same for other nut butters and spreads. People who are travelling and need a snack will find this out only after a bag has been opened.

Hummus and soft dips get flagged

Liquid rule applies to hummus, salsa, guacamole and creamy dips even if packaged with crackers. TSA considers them as spreadable. If the container is more than 3.4 ounces, it will not be allowed in a carry-on. Occasionally, frozen solid versions happen to pass, but most travellers don’t think that far ahead. The problem is not present with dry chickpeas like roasted chickpeas.

The yogurt is considered a liquid or gel and since larger than 3.4 ounces caps or tubes are retained, they do not get removed. Spreadable cheeses, such as soft cheeses, have the same limitation. Hard cheeses, which tend to be solid, are usually ok in any size.

Full-size toiletries still trip travelers up

Despite the 3-1-1 rule being in effect for years, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, sun screen and other such popular items to remove. All containers must be 3.4 ounces or less and fit in one clear quart bag. Bigger size bottles are not eligible. Many still deck themselves out with the standard bottle from home and find out the limit at the checkpoint.

Empty water bottles are fine, full ones are not

TSA has seen an increase in energy drinks, juice, coffee and filled water bottles being confiscated as a result of security measures. Empty reusable bottles are allowed and can be refilled post-checkpoint.

Magic 8 balls and snow globes contain restricted liquid

A Magic 8 Ball holds more liquid than the 3.4-ounce limit, so it is not allowed in carry-on bags. Snow globes face the same restriction unless the liquid inside is under the limit. TSA has noted both items on its guidance pages. Checked baggage is the safer option for either item.

Corkscrews with blades stay behind

Many corkscrews include a small knife blade. Bladeless versions are generally permitted. Officers frequently find forgotten corkscrews in bags. Travelers usually assume corkscrews for destination dinners are harmless.  TSA treats any blade as a prohibited item in carry-on bags. Removing the blade or using a bladeless opener solves the issue.

Large powders may need extra screening

Large powders may need extra screening

Powders over 12 ounces (like baby powder, protein powder, or spices) may require extra screening, including opening or removing the container. Non-essential powders of that size are better placed in checked bags. Smaller amounts usually move through without issue. The rule is less strict than the liquid limit but still catches some people off guard.

Cast-iron pans and certain tools are restricted

Cast-iron pans and certain tools are restricted

Cookware made from cast iron is not permitted in carry-on bags as it can be used as a bludgeon. Generally, other pots and pans are okay. Carry-on bags may not contain a pocket knife, box cutter or tools with a longer blade. The most common mistake travelers make is packing kitchen tools or multi-tools.

The 3-1-1 rule still sets the baseline

The 3-1-1 rule still sets the baseline

One quart-sized bag for every passenger with containers that weigh 3.4 ounces or less, is permitted under the 3-1-1 rule. There are exemptions for liquids and baby formula, as well as breast milk, if medically necessary. The final decision at a checkpoint is up to the TSA officers. When packing, the simplest way to avoid packing surprises is to use the official “What Can I Bring?” tool prior to packing.
